Rage Against the Machines
There is a sea change happening in gyms across the US, a move away from traditional isolation-style weight machines and toward climbing walls, sandbags, working with 25 pound ropes and the like. It's called Functional Fitness. “What’s the real logic in sitting or laying down to train your legs?” asks Adam Campbell, fitness director of the Men's Health brand. Functional fitness is “far more bang for your buck” because it works multiple muscles simultaneously, he said, providing better overall strength and mobility, and a higher calorie burn.
